By default, you can only choose between a few different skins when you begin playing Minecraft. The default skinâor the way your character looksâis called âSteve.â
Steve has a very boring look and if other players in Minecraft see you playing with his skin, theyâll instantly know you are a newbie. Thankfully, Minecraft allows you to change your skins to virtually anything you want.
You can change skins in Minecraft by doing two things: using the in-game Skin Chooser, or by finding skins online and manually importing them into the game. If you look for skins online you literally have thousands upon thousands to choose from.
Letâs look at how to change skins both ways. First up, using the in-game Skin Chooser.
Changing Skins In Minecraft Using The In-Game Skin Chooser
Minecraft has recently made it very easy to change skins in-game. You accomplish this through its Skin Chooser tool. Hereâs how to do it.
There is one important thing to mention about the Skin Chooser tool. It offers dozens of skins for free, but some you need to pay for. Skins you need to pay for will have a white lock icon below them in the Skin Chooser tool.
You can unlock these skins by buying them with Minecraft Coinsâthe gameâs virtual currency. Once you buy a skin, it will be unlocked and remain unlocked for all time. This means you can select the skin whenever you want in the future to wear it without needing to pay for it again.

Changing Skins In Minecraft Using Skins Found Online
There are hundreds of thousandsâmaybe millionsâof Minecraft skins you can find online. Some of the biggest Minecraft skin sites include minecraftskins.com and NameMC.com. Minecraft skins you find online come in PNG formatâa common image file. Hereâs how to use these customs skins in your game.
I liked the Steve skin, but then the default skin was set to Alex. I don't mind Alex, but I want my default set back to Steve. When opening the MC launcher, I changed the skin to the Steve skin file that is in the MC assets folder. This gave me the Steve skin, but it treated the Steve skin like a downloaded skin, not a default. The problem with this? It didn't work with texture/resource packs. For example, I have a Gravity Falls pack that changes Steve to Dipper Pines. But when I have the Steve on, it won't change to Dipper!! Any advice?

Playing Minecraft is all about creativity, and that's not limited just to the blocks you place. After playing for a while, the default character skin and world texture can get a bit boring, so add style to your worlds and help your character stand out on crowded servers by changing your skin and resource pack. Both the computer and console versions of the game let you change things up, but with a few notable distinctions.
Find and Edit Character Skins on the Computer
To find new skins for your character, browse one of the Minecraft skin libraries online, such as MinecraftSkins.net, The Skindex or MCSkinSearch. To use a skin as-is, download it and then upload it on the Minecraft site.
To edit a skin, open the file you downloaded in any image editor -- even Microsoft Paint works fine. Skin files resemble unfolded papercraft dolls, making it a bit difficult to identify which part of the image corresponds to a particular body part. As a guide, or to build a skin from scratch, use the skin templates found on Minecraft Wiki. To make changes to a skin, just draw on the image, save it and upload it.
Use a Character Skin on the Computer
On the computer version of Minecraft, your character's skin is tied to your Mojang account, rather than your computer or a particular world. To change it, log into the official Minecraft website and open the 'Profile' page. Choose whether your skin fits the original Steve model or the thin-armed Alex model added in Minecraft 1.8. Press 'Browse' ('Select File' on some Web browsers) and pick the skin file on your computer.
Change World Textures on the Computer
To reskin an entire world, install a new resource pack, sometimes called a texture pack. Back in the game's early years, this process required you to modify game files, but Minecraft now includes a menu for easily switching between packs. Open the 'Options' menu, click 'Resource Packs' and press 'Open Resource Pack Folder' to open the folder on your computer for installing new packs. Place any packs you download into this folder, then select them in Minecraft to change the look of the game. To find packs, check sites such as Planet Minecraft, Curse and Minecraft Forum.
Change Skins and Textures on Console
You can't download user-made skins and texture packs onto a console the way you can on a computer, but the console editions of Minecraft do offer a few options for customizing your look. Open the 'Help & Options' menu and pick 'Change Skin' to select one of the alternate skins built into the game. To get additional skins, buy skin packs on the PlayStation Store or Xbox Live.
Similarly, the console stores sell a few texture packs for changing the look of your Minecraft worlds. Unlike on computer, where you can switch textures back and forth, the console version of Minecraft requires you to pick a texture pack when you first create a new world.
Finally, you can also buy mash-up packs which include both a new texture pack and a set of skins.

More ArticlesMinecraft continues to be as popular as ever, so itâs not surprising that players want to upgrade the appearance of their characters and thus stand out from the crowd. Fortunately, the question of how to change your skin in Minecraft can be answered easily!
Using the In-Game Skin Chooser
The first option you have if you want to change your skin in Minecraft is to open the skin chooser directly in the game. It is obviously the easiest way when you play the game on your computer but it is also the most limited one. You can display the skin-choosing feature by simply clicking on the hanger icon that can be found on the title screen underneath the default character.
The majority of different skins offered in the game can be installed for free but there are also a number of those that can be chosen only in exchange for Minecraft coins. If you look at all the skins, those that have to be bought have a lock icon on them.
